What do you think about the current situation of green hydrogen investments in Spain?

📉 The slow march of green hydrogen threatens investments of 26 billion in Spain.

Expectations of a rapid transition and ambitious European targets encouraged a rapid stream of announcements, but with slow execution. The market is confident of continued support for the sector, but requires solid business plans and better identification of potential demand.

The combination of money and high expectations is always problematic. This is true in politics, as could be seen with the departure of Portugal’s Prime Minister Antonio Costa over a corruption investigation related to energy projects involving hydrogen. It is also true in the stock market: the US company Plug Power, which specialises in the manufacture of electrolysers and hydrogen cells, saw its value plunge 40% in just one session a week ago after announcing negative cash flows. The situation is repeated on the other side of the Atlantic, with the British Ceres Power, which has lost 85% of its stock market value in just one year. Despite its contracts to supply electrolysers to giants such as Shell and Bosch, the market seems to have reduced its appetite for risk in this sector.

What do you think about H2PLT’s application to go public on BME Scaleup?

🚀 Green hydrogen company H2PLT has officially filed its application to go public on BME Scaleup, the new trading segment of the Spanish stock exchange. The energy company, founded by entrepreneur Sisco Sapena, also founder and CEO of Lleida.net, expects to raise around €15 million in the coming months and plans to ring the bell between December this year and January 2024. According to Sapena, “going public on BME Scaleup is a key step in our path towards growth and the consolidation of a new ecosystem model in the field of green hydrogen”.

H2PLT has developed a modular and replicable green hydrogen mini-generation ecosystem, which uses hydrogen as a reelectrification vector and in applications in electro-powered stations. Its business model is based on the sale of hydrogen created by solar energy, its conversion into electricity at night and its sale to the wholesale market or through its own network of electro-lift stations. The company’s Power-to-Power system allows it to convert green hydrogen into electricity through fuel cells. The company focuses on promoting electrified mobility through “H2aX” applications and on the development of small photovoltaic plants exclusively for the generation of green hydrogen.

🌍 #greenhydrogen 📊 #decisiveinvestment

What do you think about the current situation of green hydrogen projects and their investment?

The IEA reports that only 4% of green hydrogen projects have a firm investment decision.

🌬️ Low-emission hydrogen accounts for less than 1% of total global hydrogen production and use.

Annual low-emission hydrogen production could approach 38 million tonnes by 2030 if all announced projects are realised (27 million tonnes based on electrolysis and 10 million tonnes with capture). This represents a growth of almost 50% compared to the projections in last year’s report.

However, only 4% have a firm investment decision or are in the development phase, mainly in Europe and China, but with an upward trend in other regions such as Latin America, Australia and New Zealand or North America.

What do you think of this initiative, do you think the use of hydrogen on ships has the potential to decarbonise shipping?

🚢 Hydrogen on ships: Europe wants better risk assessment

🌐 The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) has launched a call for tenders to carry out a study of the risks related to the use of hydrogen as a fuel for ships.

🤔 Endowed with 450,000 euros, the call for tenders launched by EMSA aims to better understand the specific risks of hydrogen in the maritime environment. In this way, the agency wishes to ensure that this decarbonisation solution does not pose a threat to the health of crews and the marine environment.

Based in Lisbon, the agency explains that because of its high flammability and the risk of leaks due to its very small molecular size, hydrogen can endanger human lives, for example by suffocation or burns. In liquid form, storage at a temperature of -253°C can also lead to hypothermia and frostbite in case of an accident.

🌿 *green hydrogen 🌎 #decarbonisation⚡ #energy transition 🌍 #climate change

What do you think of this initiative, do you think green hydrogen has the potential to decarbonise the economy?

🌐 The World Bank is betting on green hydrogen to decarbonise the economy.

The World Bank has announced an ambitious initiative to increase tenfold the production of green hydrogen, a low-carbon energy source with great potential to boost the decarbonisation of key sectors such as steel and transport.

The project, which will be developed in collaboration with the OECD, the Global Infrastructure Facility and the Hydrogen Council, envisages the generation of 10 GW of green hydrogen power, equivalent to ten times the current renewable production capacity.

The aim of this initiative is to strengthen access to clean energy in developing countries, as well as to reduce the costs of financing green hydrogen and increase the speed of its adoption through economies of scale.

☀️ Green hydrogen is produced from the electrolysis of water, using renewable energy. This process generates no greenhouse gas emissions, making it a clean and sustainable alternative to grey hydrogen, which is produced from fossil fuels.

🚚 Green hydrogen has great potential to decarbonise sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as heavy transport, the steel industry or ammonia production.

🌍 The World Bank’s initiative is an important step towards boosting the development of green hydrogen. This project could help accelerate the energy transition and contribute to the fight against climate change.

⚡ #HydrogenConnection #RenewableHydrogen #GasNetwork

⚡ The CNMC (Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia) resolves the lingering uncertainties surrounding the integration of renewable hydrogen projects into the natural gas grid through blending. This landmark decision highlights the existing regulatory gaps regarding grid access in the hydrogen sector.

This decision, dated 28 September 2023, marked a significant milestone as the CNMC approved the resolution of the natural gas transmission network connection dispute brought by BDP H2 GREEN XXI, S.L. (“BDP”) against ENAGAS GTS, S.A.U. (“ENAGAS GTS”) and ENAGAS TRANSPORTE, S.A.U. (“ENAGAS TRANSPORTE”). The dispute revolved around applications to connect twenty-seven renewable hydrogen production facilities by direct blending to the natural gas backbone network.

⚡ The key issues addressed in this ruling include:

(i) The need for ENAGAS GTS to issue a binding report as a prerequisite for ENAGAS TRANSPORTE’s assessment of the projects’ connections.
(ii) The conformity of the connection requests issued by ENAGAS TRANSPORTE with the regulations in force, with special attention to the CTE issued.
(iii) Whether the right of connection to the gas network for hydrogen injection by means of blending grants preferential capacity rights over applications submitted subsequently.

⚡ The decisive action of the CNMC in resolving these issues demonstrates the growing importance and complexity of hydrogen integration into the existing energy infrastructure.
